What is the NHI? ... ational Health Insurance is compulsory medical insurance program run by the Taiwan government which ensures tat every resident has access ...JumptothemaincontentblockHomeArrival&CampusLifeNationalHealthInsurance(NHI)forInternationalStudentsWhatistheNHI?TheNationalHealthInsurance iscompulsorymedicalinsuranceprogramrunbytheTaiwangovernmentwhich ensurestateveryresidenthasaccesstoqualityandaffordablemedicalcare. NHIenrolmentismandatoryforallcitizensandforeignresidents, includingforeignstudentswhoareenrolledinafull-timeprogramataTaiwanuniversity (afterawaitingperiodof6months). Withover92percentofclinicsandhospitalscontractedtoNHI,patientshaveawidechoiceofdoctorsorhospitalstochoosefrom. ExchangestudentswhoarenotcoveredbyNHI,stillhaveaccesstoallNHIhealthcarefacilities,buthavetocheckwiththeirinsurancecompanieswhichexpenseswillbecovered.Whocanapply?InternationalStudentsstayinginTaiwanforatleast6monthsandholdingvalidResidenceCertificates(ARC)areeligibletoapplytheNHIinsurancecardandreceivebenefitsfromtheinsurance(cf.NationalHealthLawArticle 9Item 1)HowmuchistheNHIfee?TheNHIfeeforstudentsisNTD826permonthandwillbecollectedeverysixmonths(NTD4,956).Itisincludedinthetuitionfeepaymentsatthebeginningofeachsemester. Studentsareinsuredforthewholeacademicyear,includingsummerandwintervacations. Youhavetocontinuepayinginsurancefees duringspringorsummervacation,evenifyouarenotstayinginTaiwanduringthattime. EmergencymedicalbillspaidoutsideofTaiwanarecoveredduringtheseperiodsaslongaspropermedicalcertificatesandreceiptsarepresented.StudentswhorefusetojointheprogramwillbefinedbetweenNT3,000toNT15,000.Beforethefineispaid,NHIwillnotcoveranymedicalexpensesevenapplicantshavepaidtheNHIfeesinthemeantime(cf. NationalHealthLaw, Article 88).HowtopaytheNHIfee?YouwillbeeligibletojointheNHIprogramafterawaitingperiodofsixmonths.Withthebeginningofthe 2ndsemester,theNHIfeeswillbeincludedinthetuitionfeebillwhichcanpaidonline,atthepostoffice,oratconvenientstores. Whenyourstatuschanges,e.g.
